Parish Church of St Peter
II
Church, 1846, attributed to George Webster of Kendal. Ashlar with slate roof.
Single vessel of 4 bays with west tower and spire. Plinth, sill string, corbel
table, coping to gables on deep kneelers, east gable cross. Buttresses separate
the bays and are chamfered and offset. Angle buttresses to east and west
corners and to tower. Windows, in splayed reveals, are of 2 lights with a
circle in the pointed head, including the west window; only the east window is
more elaborate, having a stepped arrangement of 3 of these windows. The tower
is of 3 stages, with a south doorway of one order. The third stage is splayed
back to an octagon and has a small louvred belfry opening in each cardinal
face. Short octagonal stone spire. The interior is very simple but retains the
unity of nave and chancel, the principal feature being a low 3-decker pulpit at
the head of the auditorium. Small organ gallery under the tower. Braced
king-post trusses to roof. Clear lattice glazing.
