Church. 1859-60. By G E Street for Hannah Cholmley. Gritstone ashlar with
bands of sandstone, plain tile roof. Narthex, north-west tower, 3-bay nave,
apsidal chancel with vestry to north. High Victorian Gothic. 3-stage tower
with plinth, string course and lancet beneath quatrefoil to first stage.
String course supports gabled second stage. Octagonal belfry with openings
separated by alternate grey marble and orange stone columns, the grey ones
having ornate Italianate capitals. Spirelet with lucarnes. To right: lean-
to porch of 3 columns with Italianate capitals supporting massive dosserets
carrying hipped roof. West door: 2-centred arch carried on responds with
foliate capitals. Rose window to gable end. Square-headed door to tower.
Nave: 2-light plate-traceried windows. Chancel: 3-light window to south,
three 2-light windows to east end, all with plate tracery. Interior: font
and pulpit with inlaid polychrome marble. Cinquefoil cusped chancel arch.
Aumbry and double sedilia. Elaborately inlaid 3-panel reredos by Earp.
Painted ceiling to chancel. Stained glass by Clayton and Bell. Hutchinson
