Circa 1900 by Frank A Tugwell, altered and interior restored 1972 by Roderick
Ham. Irregular corner site. 3 storeys and attics. 8-bay entrance front with
octagonal tower on corner surmounted by cupola. Slated roof with parapets and
coped gables. Red brick with stone dressings. Architraved sash windows, some
with cornices and pediments. Arched theatre entrance. Modern shop. Edwardian
interior with plasterwork enriched with floral motifs and gilded. Panelled
ceiling with centred dome. Carved circle and balcony fronts enriched with masks,
swags and putti. 2 tiers of boxes with bowed fronts and flanked by pilasters
carrying cornice of broken pediments. Architraved proscenium opening with central
oval cartouche flanked by cornucopiae. Proscenum with moulded cornice and frieze
enriched with masks and scroll decoration. Interesting entrance foyer in 'Art
Nouveau' style with frieze in low relief by Frances Darlington. Included for
interior.
