5/25 Elsecar Footrill
Footrill (pedestrian mine entrance). Probably c1795 for the Fitzwilliam estate.
Dressed sandstone. Sunken retaining wall flanked by damaged wing walls. Quoined
doorway with rebated surround and deep lintel now has square-latticed iron door.
Ashlar-lined, vaulted tunnel slopes into the ground to give access to the faces
of the Barnsley coal seam. Rare survival of this early form of mine entrance.
