Description

SE50SW HIGH MELTON DONCASTER ROAD
(south side)

7/92 Milestone against
roadside wall
immediately to
north of
Leylands Farm Cottages

II

Milestone. Probably late c18. Limestone. Round-headed slab now partly buried
within roadside bank. Upper part of inscription mostly weathered away, lower
part well preserved beneath soil level. Reads:

W----------- / Hous- / IX / Miles

Most probably indicates the distance to Wentworth House. Several such mileposts
are shown on early Ordnance Survey maps but few appear to survive in situ.
