THORPE SALVIN WORKSOP ROAD

Cottages now 2 dwellings. Early and mid C18, possibly with earlier core, with
C19 addition. Deeply-coursed limestone, pantile roof. 2 storeys, 5:1 windows
to 1st floor. Older pact on left: large quoins. Doorway to right has chamfered
ashlar surround with lintel inscribed 'MAN TO MAN IS S0E UNJUST HE IS A WISEMAN
THAT KNOWS WHOE TO TRUST' and with exterior light fixed over weathered naturalistic
carving. Flanking 3-light windows in double-chamfered window surrounds without
mullions, similar windows over. Later doorway on left has raised ashlar surround
with keystone, 2 square windows on left have C20 casements in raised ashlar
surrounds, 2 similar windows over and narrower blocked window above door.
Addition set back on right has 3-light window to each floor with projecting
sills and plain lintels. Brick end stacks and 2 ridge stacks flanking bay with
carved lintel. Left return: blocked doorway with bead-moulded ashlar surround
and shaped lintel;2 blocked windows on right have square-faced surrounds. Said
to have timber wall post behind front-right quoins, 2 straight joints on the
front wall may indicate an origin as a 2-bay timber-framed house clad in early
C18 and extended later in the C18. The inscribed lintel may be a re-used piece
from Thorpe Salvin Old Hall (q.v).
