1876. Architects: Milnes and France, similar grand warehouse range continuing
Nos 11 to 21 (odd). Wedge corner with Balme Street. The top 2-storeys have been
partially rebuilt. Four original storeys, the ground floor has a basement in part
(sloping site) and is slightly battered as a podium to the main floor. Ashlar
sandstone with deep V grooved horizontal rustication to ground floor with vertical
tooling, plat band separating basement. Panelled frieze with console brackets to
bold cornice over ground floor. Giant pilastrade to 2 main storeys, deep plain
frieze and large modillion bracket cornice. Sill band to top floor. The partly
rebuilt top floors are of sandstone "brick" with parapet coping, 18 windows, those
in basement with ornate cast iron grilles. Cornices over first floor windows. The
levelled corner with Balme Street contains the principal entrance flanked by engaged
Doric columns on moulded bases, the lower parts of shafts fluted; olive leaf carving
to entablature. The doorway is round headed and recessed in 2 orders with impost
string carried out to the columns; zig-zag fluting to doorhead and intricately
carved tympanum. Six bay similar return front to Balme Street.
