Description

SO 23 SE LLANVEYNOE CP -

2/28 Daren Farmhouse

- II

Farmhouse. Early C16, altered mid-C19 and C20. Sandstone rubble with
part C20 tiled and part Welsh slate roof. Longhouse aligned north-east/
south-west facing south-east, with former byre at lower north-east end,
later inserted stacks backing onto former through-passage and at north
east gable end. Single storey with attic; south-east front: four C20
dormer windows, two 2-light C20 windows in cambered-headed openings to
left and similar window to right of doorway with ledged door. Interior
reveals cruck construction, three largely intact trusses though cut at
lower level, C17 inserted ceiling in byre end. The tie-beam to the
east of the through-passage has only small mortices for a light partition
implying that the passage was also used as a feedwalk to the byre. This
is an important example illustrating the principal features of the longhouse
plan. (E Mercer, English Vernacular Houses, RCHM 1975, p 38/9 and 168;
RCHM Vol I, p 174).
