Lodging and kitchens for Hemington Hall, converted into separate house 1976.
Circa 1550 with 1976 alterations and extension. Dressed stone with C20 tiled
roof and rebuilt stone chimney at right end. 2-storey range, formerly with 2
large rooms on each floor. Chamfered plinth. West front has 5 bays of 2-light
windows with chamfered stone surrounds and mullions, 2 of the upper mullions
replaced. Ground floor central window adapted to C20 French doors 1976. Other
ground floor windows have casement cornices. To right of centre is a small
garderobe projection with catslide roof, slit window to first floor, and blocked
opening at base. Left gable end has truncated external chimney, and single-
storey C20 extension of re-used brick with entry and projecting wing. This wing
is built in the manner of a cart shed with brick piers between glazed bays and
garage entries. Right gable of original block has very small arched window to
drying kiln. Rear has central single lights to each floor, 2 glazed doorways
with 4-centred stone heads, and wide blocked opening to left. To first floor
right is a C20 window in blocked doorway to former external stairs. INTERIOR:
ground floor has massive fireplaces. That at left end has wide depressed stone
arch and relieving arch chamfered, and part restored C20. Traces of former oven
opening to right. C20 doorway cut through rear wall of fireplace. Fireplace at
right end has massive low timber lintel across entire width of building,
chamfered over fireplace and doorway to drying kiln in south west corner. Kiln
has domed roof with small blocked flue to main chimney, small window, and low
blocked opening to main fireplace. Main fireplace has flue divided into two,
and is now also divided by C20 brick piers. Floor beams are mostly original,
with stopped chamfers. Upper storey has fireplace at left end with chamfered
4-centred stone arch and broach-stopped jambs. Original double purlin roof with
tie-beam and collar trusses and small curved wind-braces. C20 partition walls
and fittings have done very little to disturb original features.
