Description

PAVENHAM CHURCH LANE
SP 9855-9955
25/324 Parish Church of St.Peter
13.7.1964
- I

Parish Church of coursed limestone rubble consisting of chancel, nave, N.
chapel, S. transept, N. aisle, S. porch and W. tower with broach spire. Some
C13 work may survive in the nave. The reused S. doorway is of C13 date. Most
of the surviving mediaeval work is C14. The nave retains its original low-
pitched roof. The three bay N. arcade and N. aisle were constructed in the
C15. In the 1840s a major repair scheme was put in hand. The C14 chancel was
altered and given a steeply pitched slate roof. The C15 S. transept was
remodelled but still retains its C15 windows and statue niches. The N. chapel
received a new roof. In 1847 a new vestry was added. The Church is full of
Jacobean carved panelling collected by local landowner Thomas Abbott Green
c.1870. He bought up all the locally available carved timberwork and also
collected some Flemish work. This was all used to form a Western gallery and
panelling.
