Small country house. Built 1708-1714 for Richard Orlebar with large domestic
wing added c1860 to the N side by F C Penrose. The original architect is not
known. The earlier part of the building is of finely coursed limestone rubble
with ashlar dressings. Three storeys. The top storey, being in a slightly
different stone and style, must be an afterthought. It has plain Doric
pilasters with roof cornice and balustraded parapet. There is also a moulded
cornice to the top of the first floor which is supported by giant Corinthian
pilasters. Windows are all sashes in flush frames with moulded surrounds. The
E. entrance front is of seven bays divided 2:3:2 by pilasters. Central half-
glazed door with semi-circular fanlight, architrave surround and consoles
supporting a broken scrolly pediment enclosing an achievement in the tympanum.
The S. elevation is five window bays with round-headed semi-circular niches
flanking the central windows on ground and first floors. In the centre of the
top storey is a large pediment, carved by John Hunt of Northampton, with a bas
relief of Diana. This is in tribute to Diana, wife to Richard Orlebar. To
the W. are two projecting wings which are slightly later additions. In the
centre is a doorway with fine arched hood on carved brackets. To the N. is
the C19 wing added by Penrose. It is of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings
and of two storeys. The roof slopes to the E. still have their Welsh slates;
to the W. are plain concrete tiles. Windows are sashes in architrave
surrounds. To the E. are three parallel hipped roofs behind a parapet. To
the N. of these is a recessed section and then a projecting gable with
dentilled pediment. A central large chimney stack breaks through the
pediment. The W. elevation is much simpler with central gable breaking
forward slightly.
