United Reform chapel, now flats. 1868. By CF Hansom. Snecked
limestone ashlar, Pennant rubble with limestone dressings to
the apse and S side, and a slate roof. Cruciform plan with an
apse and NW chapel. Decorated Gothic Revival style.
Polygonal apse with 2-light windows below a circular light and
parapet of pierced trefoils. Steeply gabled N transept gable
has a large rose of 6 hexafoils round a central circle, with
setback buttresses to pinnacles; 6-bay N elevation of 2-light
windows beneath a drip, separated by deep buttresses with
crocketed gables, steep roof has decorative ridges and iron
finials; an octagonal chapel to the W has 2-light windows with
cinquefoils, deep corner gargoyles below the parapet and a
steep roof with lead crockets.
Steeply gabled W front is flanked by a wide S buttress with a
cinquefoil band at the base, and a stepped N buttress rising
to a buttressed octagonal pinnacle; in between are 3 open
arches with attached shafts and foliate capitals, fleurons to
the mouldings, and linked hoods with stops of mythical beasts;
above a zigzag strip is a 6-light Decorated window with blind
trefoil panels at the base, and a pierced oculus with trefoils
in the apex. Behind the arches, the porch has a polychromatic
sexpartite vault with finely carved foliate bosses; 3 arched
doorways, the N blind, and arches at either end, each of 2
orders with foliate capitals and detached shafts; in the
middle and the 2 side arches is a shouldered doorway, with
carved scenes of Christ teaching in the tympana.
INTERIOR not inspected, but previous list records 'plain
interior with hammerbeam roof.' A projected tower was never
built.
