This house was designed by Sir James Knowles for Lord Tennyson and built in 1869.
It was occupied by Tennyson until his death, chiefly in the summer months when he
wished to escape from the Isle of Wight visitors whom he found had become trouble-
some at Farringford from 1869 onwards. Tennyson died in the house on the 6 October
1892. It is in semi-Gothic style. 2 storeys and attic. 3 windows facing south.
Local sandstone. Open parapet. High hipped slate roof with 3 tall gabled dormers
surmounted by elaborate finials at their apex and angles. Stone mullioned casement
windows. Splayed bay on ground and first floor in the centre of south front. Flat
bay to west front and behind it the ballroom with attic over. The east front has a
wide portico of 3 pointed arches. Grade I for historical associations.
