Church. Founded 1154, C14 tower; C15 upper stage of tower and clerestorey;
aisles c1844; chancel, vestry and porch c1868-70. All tracery windows much
restored C19. Large dressed stone to tower and clerestorey, hammer-dressed
stone to aisles and chancel, stone slate roofs. West tower, aisled nave with
south porch, chancel with north chapel and vestry. 2-stage tower; plinth,
angle buttresses and south-east corner stair tower with 3 lancets, set in base
is doorway with ogee lintel. West window of 3 cusped lights surmounted by
quatrefoil. Set above in all faces is a 2-light arched window with cusped
lights, that to south blocked by octagonal clock face. Cyma-moulded band
separates stages; top stage has 3-light belfry openings with panel tracery;
lombard frieze to embattled parapet surmounted by crocketed pinnacles.
Nave: 4 bays. Lean-to aisles with offset diagonal buttresses. Porch set in
1st bay has pointed-arched doorway with octagonal columns with moulded capitals,
diagonal buttresses and crow-stepped gable surmounted by cross. Ribbed vaulted
roof. Inner doorway is segmental-pointed of 2 orders with chamfered surrounds
and cushion-moulded imposts. 2nd bay of nave has 3-light window with cusped
ogee-headed mullioned lights, 3rd and 4th bays and all lights to rest of
2 lights. Clerestorey has traceried 2-light windows set within square-headed
double-chamfered surround. Aisle and nave have coped gables with cross to
apex. Octagonal chimney to rear at junction with chancel. Lower chancel of
4 bays with arched doorway set in 3rd bay. Other bays have 2-light windows
with curvilinear traceried heads set within square-headed double-chamfered
surrounds. Offset buttress between 1st and 2nd window. Elaborate 5-light
east window with curvilinear tracery flanked by offset buttresses with small
gabled vestry attached to northernmost buttress. This has 4-light window with
cusped lights.

Interior: nave has pointed-arch arcade of 2 orders carried on octagonal columns
with moulded capitals, much renewed C19. Partly obscured small round-arched
window to south arcade, possibly of C12 origin. Tower has tall pointed arch of
2 orders slightly skewed with chamfered surround and small 2-centred arched
doorway to tower. Chancel has 2-bay arcade to north chapel. C19 roofs to nave
and chancel. C14 octagonal pedestal font, the base renewed, with fine early
C17 cover of 3 stages with fretted Gothic panels and drop finials to lower stage.
c1870 Tudor revival-style pews and choir stalls. East window has some good
fragments of medieval glass. Set in base of tower are 10 incised grave slabs
dating from the Saxon period to the C14. Also several wall monuments, including
tablet to Lady and Sir Walter Calverley, c1752, of polychromatic marble
surmounted by an achievement of arms and with 3 putti to apron.
