The remaining part of a much larger late C16 moated house, said to have been built
by Edwin sandys, Arehibishop of York, and here his wife lived after his death.
(There is a fine memorial to her in the church of St Mary). The house is of red
brick with black brick diapering. The original building may have been on the
courtyard plan and the portion that remains is the Hall and a small west wing,
considerably altered. The main block is of 3 storeys with a later parapet, The
front has 3 mullioned and transomed windows of 3 lights on the 2nd storey, a 2
storey bay window of 5 lights and a window of 3 lights. All the windows have
stone mullions and transomes. On the east side of the west wing and obscuring
part of the main block is a 2 storeyed porch with original stone 4 centred outer
archway with sunk spandrels. The Wing has a small gable on the south side and
a modern copy of the 2 storeyed bay of the main block. A small wing extends further
west. There are other original mullioned windows. Roofs tiled, with an original
chimney stack at the rear with a row of 5 shafts, the middle one set diagonally.
The interior has some original panelling, a panelled overmantel and some original
stone fireplaces. Most of the moat remains and there are parts of an outer moat.
