Parish church. Medieval, rebuilt apart from part of the tower
1887-8 by Bell and Roper of Manchester. Rock face ashlar and
ashlar. Plain tile roofs. Coped gables with single ridge
crosses to the east nave and east chancel. Single stack to the
south chancel. Buttressed and set on a chamfered plinth. North
west tower, nave, west porch, aisles, south porch with stair
turret, south vestry with porch and stair turret, north organ
chamber and chancel. Tower set on a chamfered plinth with
moulded band over of 2 stages and embattled with corbel table and
spire with 4 lucarnes. The west side has a single window with 2
cinqeufoil arched lights under a flat arch. Above is a single
trefoil arched light with a single 2 light window above with
cusped tracery under a flat arch. There is a single similar 2
light window on the north side with a single rectangular stair
ight below, the east side having the remains of a single similar
2 light window. Each side of the bell chamber has a single pair
of panels, each with 2 cinquefoil, blind arches, over extends
a band of fleuron and over a single pair of 2 light arched
openings with cusped tracery. Over on the east and south sides
are single clock faces. The gabled west chancel has blind
cinquefoil arched panels over the buttresses. Shallow lean-to
porch. Entrance with chamfered jambs and moulded pointed arch,
hood mould and label stops. The spandrels decorated with single
shields. Brattishing over. Inner pair of segmental arched
doorways divided by a single colonette with fillet and decorative
capital supporting a carved figure set into a cinqeufoil arched
niche and flanked by single decorative quatrefoils. Over the
porch is a single large 5 light window with cusped tracery, hood
mould with label stops and decorative finial flanked by single
small arched and cusped lights. Embattled north aisle with 6
crocketed pinnacles and 5 arched 3 light windows with flowing
tracery, continuous sill band broken by the buttresses. The east
wall has a single similar window with single small decorative
quatrefoil over. Projecting from the chancel is the coped,
gabled organ chamber with band following the line of the gable
and single circle with 3 mouchettes in the apex of the north
side. The embattled east wall has a single window with 2
cinquefoil arched lights under a flat arch. The chancel with
moulded band over the plinth has in the north wall 3 three light
windows with cusped tracery under a flat arch. The east chancel
has single crocketed pinnacles at the angles below each are 4
small gargoyles and blind traceried panels. Single arched 7
light window with cusped tracery and hood mould with decorative
label stops and decorative finial. In the apex is a single
arched and cusped light with hood mould and finial. The south
chancel corresponds to the north. Projecting is the vestry with
embattled east wall with single window with 2 cinquefoil arched
lights under a flat arch. The south wall is gabled with band
following the line of the gable and has 2 similr windows. Over
is a single circle with 3 mouchettes. To the left is the
attached octagonal embattled stair turret with blind traceried
panelling under the embattlements and 3 rectangular lights. To
the left is the embattled south aisle with 6 crocketed pinnacles
and projecting porch with brattishing to parapet, and frieze of
fleuron under. Single window with 2 trefoil arched lights under
a flat arch and to the left a moulded pointed arched doorway.
Remains of a single arched 3 light window with flowing tracery
above. To the left are 4 similar windows. Continuous sill band
broken by the buttresses. Further left is the 2 storey coped,
gabled porch with single ridge cross. The angle buttresses being
surmounted by panels with blind tracery and crocketed pinnacles.
Doorway with chamfered jambs and moulded arch decorated with
fleuron. Hood mould with label stops. Spandrel decorated with
diaper. Over is a single window with 2 cinquefoil arched lights
under a flat arch, the remainder of this wall having blind
traceried panelling. The east and west walls have single similar
2 light windows. Inner chamfered arched doorway. To the left is
the attached octagonal embattled stair turret with blind
traceried panelling under the embattlements and 2 rectanguler
lights. The gabled west wall of the south aisle has a single
arched 3 light window with flowing tracery and continuous sill
band. Single decorative quatrefoil in the apex. Interior. 6
bay south and 5 bay north nave arcades with moulded and chamfered
arches, no capitals, with hood moulds. Moulded and chamfered
nave and aisle/tower arches. Double chamfered chancel arch with
rood screen. North aisle/organ chamber and south aisle/vestry
moulded arches with hood moulds enclosing 2 inner chamfered
arches each with traceried wooden screen. Single circle
containing decorative quatrefoil in the spandrel. 3 bay
chancel/organ chamber arcade with moulded arches. The right
single bay being blocked. Similar chancel/vestry arcade, however
the right 2 bays with wooden traceried screens and the left
single bay with sedilia and piscina which have cusped arches
over, ogee hood moulds and decorative finials. Over the west
doorway are decorative panels with 2 decorative shields.
Decorative altar table. Panelled walls to nave and aisles. C19
octagonal ashlar font. C14 octagonal ashlar font on octagonal
pedestal. Wooden barrel-vaulted chancel with decorative coloured
roof. Nave roof with blind traceried wooden panelling.
