03/10/74 The Tower of Strangeways Gaol


Tower formerly combining the functions of observation and
water tower.1866-68, by Alfred Waterhouse. Red brick with
sandstone dressings.Octagonal plan. Minaret style, approx.365
feet high, with an archedrecess in each side, a perimeter
gallery with brick balustraded parapeton stone corbels, and a
domed cupola with louvred openings in the sidesand cast-iron
cresting to the roof. A very prominent landmark in thisarea of
the city.
