House and fishmonger's shop; now restaurant. Dated 1898 with
C20 shopfront. Red brick in English garden-wall bond, with
dressings of moulded brick and buff faience; pantile roof with
brick stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey 3-bay front, the centre bay pedimented.
Shopfront has plate glass windows, central doorway and
upstairs door at right end. Upper floor articulated by
pilasters with moulded sunk panels enclosing floral motif,
raised on pedestals with moulded coping extending full width
of outer bays. Entablature comprises panelled frieze and
moulded dentilled cornice beneath panelled parapet interrupted
by pedestal piers crowned with ball finials: frieze and
parapet panels moulded with garlands of fruit. Scrolled
pediment to centre bay has moulded eagle finial, and tympanum
incorporating date, monogram of YAC and the York City shield
of arms embedded in palm fronds. Centre window is recessed
beneath elliptical arch with grooved keyblock on 4 orders of
colonnettes with moulded capitals: window is canted bay with
Ipswich window in centre beneath scrolled pediment. Outer bays
have cross-windows with casements beneath flat arches of
rubbed brick with grooved keyblocks and moulded sunk panels
below incorporating garlanded fruits. Fine scrolled bracket at
centre of first floor supports pendant lantern.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Included for group value as an integral part of Fossgate.
