Description

LEEDS

SE2933SE GLOBE ROAD, Holbeck
714-1/77/838 (North side (off))
05/08/76 Tower Works, boiler house chimney
(Formerly Listed as:
GLOBE ROAD
Verona Tower)

GV II*

Also known as: Verona Tower.
Boiler house chimney. 1864, restored 1989. By Thomas Shaw for
TW Harding's Tower Works. Polychrome brick. Square plan,
bracketed cornice, 3-light arched 'belfry' stage, deep
bracketed cornice, octagonal top stage, round-arched arcaded
panels with bracketed sills.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The design was based on the (much taller) Lamberti Tower in
Verona, hence the alternative name, Verona Tower. The
Italianate style was popular for industrial buildings
throughout the mid C19, this fine example typifies the high
quality of workmanship and materials used at the Tower Works.
For historical information on the works see Tower Works,
Entrance range (qv).
