House, 1814, police station from 1838 and now offices.
Multi-coloured stock brick with slate mansard with dormers
behind stone cornice and blocking course.
3 storeys, attic and basement, 3 bays. Central door and
round-headed ground-floor windows in recesses with gauged
brick round arches and stucco strings at springs. Double door
has panelled jambs with Greek fret motif, cornice head and
patterned fanlight. Sash windows with glazing bars, those to
1st and 2nd floors with flat, gauged-brick arches. 1st-floor
stucco sill band.
INTERIOR: has some good surviving fluted and carved timber
door architraves, carved doors with circular motifs, pilasters
supporting groin-vaulted ceiling in hall, and decorative
friezes to main rooms.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron handrail, overthrow with
lamp-holder and area railings.
The building is now named after its first occupant, Sir
William Gaitskell.
