BROUGHTON EAST FIELD BROUGHTON SD 38 SE 2/14 Broughton Lodge 25.3.70 II House, now 8 flats. 1780-90 by J Birch or his son. For directors of Backbarrow Cotton Mill. Roughcast stone with ashlar dressings and ashlar south facade; hipped slate roof. Wyatt type design. 3 storeys, 5 bays, with flanking connections to 2-storey pavilions. Band over ground floor, 1st floor sill band and top cornice. Windows are sashed with glazing bars, the central 1st floor window has frieze and consoled cornice. Entrance has Ionic porch with frieze, cornice and blocking course; 8-fielded panel door. Small sashed windows to returns of ground floor. Return lateral stacks. Connections have cornices and parapets; sashed windows. Pavilions have pediments; Venetian windows in round-headed recesses and top-hung casements to 1st floor windows. 3-bay returns have top cornices, top-hung casement windows, and lateral stacks. Rear has top cornice and bowed central bay with parapet. Windows are sashed with glazing bars; central bay has tripartite stair window. 4th bay has entrance with plain overlight. Connections have Doric aedicules and C20 fielded-panel doors. Pavilions project, with gable-end stacks; that to left has entrance and top hung casements to return; that to right has entrance and top-hung casements to end, and casements to return. Interior not inspected but believed to have original Adam-style fireplaces, door cases etc., and stair with stick balusters.
