Steam crane. 1886, disused from c1980. By James Taylor & Co.,
Engineers, of Birkenhead. Iron and ashlar. Square ashlar base
with stone steps on the east side, with wrought-iron handrail
and balustrade. Triangular steel cabin mounted on roller
track, with 2 doorways with wooden sliding doors, and glazed
cab to front. Jib with double tubular booms and strutted stays
above, attached to the triangular main frame. At the rear,
square boiler enclosure with rounded end, segmental roof and
tubular flue. INTERIOR has cast-iron structure with horizontal
twin cylinder hoist engine and similar vertical luffing engine
with worm drive. Vertical boiler at rear. Built to serve ships
using the Alexandra Dock (qv).
