Stone Tenter Posts Between Heights Farmhouse and Greaves Farmhouse

A Grade II Listed Building in Uppermill, Oldham

Tenter Posts, in Saddleworth, near Oldham

Uploader's Comments

Tenter Posts were used in the stretching and drying of woollen cloth.
The posts supported a framework with hooks.

These posts are situated between the Heights farmhouse and Greaves farmhouse, Thurston Clough Road, Saddleworth. They were erected in 1840 for Robert Greaves who was a flannel manufacturer.

It is where the phrase 'on tenterhooks', meaning stretched or worried, comes from.
