Uploader's Comments

The building with "1834" on the parapet comprises 8, 9, and 10 East Cliff.

No. 8 East Cliff, in the centre of the photo and left-most of the three houses, has the bottom two storeys painted white. It is also known as "Elizabeth House".

Charles Lightoller, second mate (second officer) on board the RMS Titanic, and the most senior officer to survive the 1912 iceberg disaster, was also an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve at the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). "Lights" Lightoller was put on active service and began living at 8 East Cliff in 1916 after being attached to the Dover Patrol.
