Quilters Vault

A Grade II Listed Building in Southampton, City of Southampton

Quilters Vault, High Street, Southampton

Uploader's Comments

This cellar, which used to stand under the Royal George public house at 88-89 High Street, probably dates from the 12th or 13th centuries and stands between Porters' Lane and Broad Lane. It has a surviving barrel vault some 60 feet long running east to west. The public house was destroyed during the blitz of 1940 and the site is now on open land. It can be firmly identified with the 15th-century description “Dame Isabella's vault” (Sotonopedia.com) The vault takes its name from Eliza Quilter, a 19th-century landlady, who it is said kept order in the pub with a big stick she kept behind the bar, and never needed the police to intervene (tudorhouseandgarden.com)
