Identified on the Tithe Map of Uttoxeter as Bank House where in the 1841 census Martha Strongitharm is recorded as running a school. This was Bank House Ladies' Boarding School which had previously been run by a Miss Howe and first recorded in Pigot's 1828 Directory. Circa 1845 it became the home of Rev John Kinder Head Master of Alleyne's Boys Grammar School which moved to the new site adjacent to the house in 1859.
