The Allan Ramsay Obelisk has stood near Penicuik (south of Edinburgh)for 250 years and is dedicated to the memory of the Scottish poet (or makar) who was born in 1686. It was erected by Sir James Clerk, a friend of the poet and patron of the Arts who had a house nearby.
