Originally built by the elder Benjamin Hall (1778-1817), not his son of the same name as mentioned in the schedule, the tunnel was later enlarged for a full size standard gauge railway. A brick-lined, horseshoe-shaped arch forms the western end of the tunnel. Also of note is a riveted iron trough aqueduct supported by slender stone piers spanning the rock-lined cutting immediately west of the portal, dating from the same time as the widening work but overlooked by the ‘experts’ at Cadw.
