HANLEY CASTLE CP - SO 84 SW 3/100 Hanley Hall 11.8.52 GV II
House. Circa 1600. Timber-framing and painted brick with tile roof. H-plan. Framed in square panels, with some studwork replaced by painted brick. Two storeys. Left-hand cross-wing in two parts, the part projecting forwards from the recessed centre being narrower with a lean-to addition against its left-hand side. The gable of the rear part is exposed to the left of the front gable. Both have struts between tie-beam and collar, and V-struts above. The wing is of one bay, with the ground floor window pro- jecting as a square oriel. The recessed centre is of two bays and has doors in the left-hand bay and at the right. The right-hand cross-wing has a two- storey canted bay window which has sashes with glazing bars on the ground floor. The exposed truss is similar to those of the other cross-wing. Chimneys at rear of hall and on left-hand walls of both cross-wings. Interior: hall has two exposed moulded ceiling beams and an inglenook. Stair has stick balusters. In the rear room of the right-hand cross-wing is a stone fireplace with Tudor arch and re-set encaustic tiles said to be from Malvern Priory. Above is an oak overmantel of two panels. The room is lined with square panelling of early C17 type. The plaster ceiling has thin intersecting moulded ribs and cast motifs which include fleur-de-lys.
