Farmhouse. C14 hall with C17 cross-wing at south-west end and further
smaller late C17 cross-wing at north-east end, further C20 alterations
and additions. Sandstone rubble with stone slate roof. Four-bay hall
range aligned north-east/south-west with cross-wing at south-west end
now forming main house, gable-end stacks and south-east gable-end
entrance, further entrance on south-east side in angle with hall range,
small cross-wing to north-west end of hall with gable-end entrances;
hall converted to barn with inserted loft at either end, two storeys with
attics to C17 cross-wing, two storeys to stable; south-west front of C17
house, gabled dormer with 2-light C20 casement window to left of centre,
one 3-light C20 casement window and similar 4-light window retaining
square-headed labels to first floor, similar windows flank small 2-light
window to ground floor, entrance obscured by C20 porch to south-east gable
end has wooden framed doorway and heavy ledged door, stack to north-west
gable end is supported on three corbels from first floor leaving room on
ground floor unheated; the shaft of a garderobe survives to the left of
the stack; north-west front of hall range to left 2-light C20 casement
window to right of former threshing floor entrance with C20 door and
window, further doorway to left; north-east side of stable cross-wing has
two 4-light wooden framed diamond mullioned windows with four triangular
vents to upper floor. Interior: of hall range reveals four cruck trusses
with braced collar to truss over former hall, trusses are fairly complete,
some plain wind-braces survive, smoke blackening is clearly visible;
C17 cross-wing retains one plank-and-muntin panelled partition on ground
floor and on first floor, stone winder staircase in south-eastern angle
with hall range and further stone winder in north-west gable end; good
chamfered ceiling beams throughout, collar and tie-beam trusses with
chamfered members (RCHM Vol I, p 184).
