Country house, now apartments, and adjoining terrace wall and steps. Late C17, remodelled early C18 for Richard Bagshawe, and further remodelled 1811-27 by Joseph Badger of Lancaster for Sir William and William John Bagshawe. Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roofs, with 4 coped stone ridge stacks and a similar rear wall stack containing a bellcote. EXTERIOR: plinth, string course, moulded eaves, coped parapet. 3 storeys; 9 window range of 12 pane sashes with stone surrounds, the central one with cornice on brackets. Above, seven 6-pane sashes with similar surrounds. Central Doric portico with entablature and glazed double doors with overlight. On either side, three 12 pane sashes with stone surrounds. Left return has similar fenestration with 4 windows. At the left corner, a canted stair turret. Right return, 2 storeys, has three 15 pane sashes each floor. To right, a single storey service building with hipped roof and a ridge stack, and a single 2-light barred mullioned window. Right return has a door flanked by a 19 pane sash to left and a smaller sash to right. Main rear elevation has irregular fenestration with a large multi pane stair window to right. Adjoining early C19 kitchen, single storey, has hipped slate roof and shouldered side wall stack with 3 coped flues. Two 4 pane sashes. To right, single storey projection with a canted corner and 6-panel door. INTERIOR: entrance hall has moulded cross beam ceiling and elliptical arched recess containing beaded 6-panel door. Marble fireplace with C19 oak overmantel. C18 main dogleg stair, 2 flights, flared at the foot, with ramped scrolled handrail and enriched vase and stem balusters. Drawing room, to left, has full height C17 panelling with fluted Ionic pilasters, dentilled cornice, and enriched cross beam ceiling with central boss. Glazed fitted bookcases and C19 Classical marble fireplace with tiled surround and overmantel mirror. Dining room, to right, has early C19 decoration with enriched cornice and ceiling, and pilastered south wall. North end has an elliptical arched half-round alcove with fluted Ionic pilasters. Marble fireplace. Open well minor staircase has cast-iron vine trail and stick balusters. Wainscotted kitchen has large fitted range with plain stone surround and mantelshelf, flanked by single chamfered segment-headed openings. First floor music room has cross beam ceiling with 2 fluted Doric columns. Various moulded 6-panel doors. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: outside, attached paved terrace with flat coped wall with pedestals. Central steps with moulded ashlar caps to piers. Approx 80m long. Oaks Park was in the ownership of the Bagshawe family from the late C17 till c1987.
